The Gardona is often referred to as a tower, fortilitium or pass, but its role as a customs checkpoint for transit towards Cadore is undoubted. The ethnographic museum of the Piave river raftsmen[\/vc_custom_heading][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text text_lead=&#8221;yes&#8221;]This is the only museum in Italy that documents the stages of woodworking to make the characteristic rafts. From the mened\u00e0s that marked the wood, to the cutting of the wood, to the flowing, to the following construction of the rafts and to the conductors, raftsmen, of these great rafts that allowed the transport of the wood to the valley. This ancient activity has documented origins as far back as Roman times, in 200 A. In the centre of Longarone, since 2009, there has been a museum dedicated to the history of Longarone and Vajont, which, through a large collection of historical images, artefacts, testimonies and films, allows visitors to find out about and deepen their knowledge of the local history.
